Correct tank water level

Remove the tank lid and look at the overflow tube (vertical pipe, usually center-right):

  • Target: Water surface about 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube
  • Too high: Water trickles into the tube constantly—the toilet may run or hiss
  • Too low: Weak flush; bowl may not clear well

Some fill valves print a water line mark on the overflow tube or valve body—use it if present.

If your toilet uses a canister flush valve (common on dual-flush models), tank level may be adjusted differently—follow the manufacturer instructions inside the tank lid or manual.

Adjust a ball float

  1. Turn off water (optional but cleaner for first attempts) — Flush once if you shut off supply.
  2. Check current level — Note whether water hits the overflow tube.
  3. Adjust the arm — On many units:
    • Lower water: Bend the float arm slightly downward, or turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise (direction may vary—turn in small steps and recheck)
    • Raise water: Bend arm up or turn screw the opposite direction
  4. Turn water on and wait — Let the tank fill completely. Do not flush during adjustment checks.
  5. Verify — Water should stop below the overflow tube. Flush once and recheck after refill.

Adjust a cylinder (cup) float

Modern fill valves (Fluidmaster-style and similar) use a sliding clip or dial:

  1. Locate the adjustment — Often a clip on a rod, a screw on top, or a dial marked with +/- symbols.
  2. Lower water level — Slide clip down on the rod, or turn adjustment toward the minus/lower marking per label.
  3. Raise water level — Slide clip up or turn toward plus/higher.
  4. Fill and verify — Same 1-inch-below-overflow rule applies.
